Governor Yusuf Resigns From NNPP Amid Party Crisis
Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has formally resigned his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing deepening internal crises and the need to safeguard the broader interest of the people of Kano State.

In a letter addressed to the Chairman of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, NNPP, Gwale Local Government Area, Governor Yusuf officially communicated his decision to withdraw from the party with effect from January 23, 2026.
The Governor expressed appreciation to the party for the platform and support extended to him, but pointed to persistent internal disputes and legal challenges that have unsettled the party’s structure nationwide.
“The growing disenfranchisement among party members has created deep divisions within the party structure, resulting in cracks that appear increasingly irreconcilable,” Governor Yusuf stated.
The resignation is part of a mass exodus, with 21 members of the State Assembly, 8 members of the House of Representatives, and 44 Local Government Chairmen also resigning from the party.
The party Secretary, Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Hon. Kabiru Zubairu, acknowledged the Governor’s resignation, commending his contributions to infrastructure, urban renewal, health, education, and economic empowerment in Kano State.
This move has sparked speculation that the Governor may eventually join the All Progressives Congress, especially after his meeting with President Bola Tinubu.
