One‑Week Sweep: Ogun 1 Customs Seizes ₦2 Billion Contraband

The Nigeria Customs Service has reaffirmed its commitment to operate with integrity, courage and professionalism in safeguarding national security, economic stability and public health.

The Acting Comptroller of Customs for Ogun I Area Command, Idiroko, Deputy Comptroller Oladapo Afeni, announced this on Wednesday while briefing journalists about series of interceptions made under his watch.

The Acting Controller, who resumed duties on 4 December 2025, said the command has seized more than ₦2 billion worth of illegal goods and narcotics.

“Since taking charge, our team has remained steadfast in revenue generation, suppressing smuggling and facilitating legitimate trade,” Afeni said.

He promised that the command will not tolerate any form of economic sabotage and will deploy every lawful means to enforce compliance.

He highlighted the command’s achievements between 4 and 15 December 2025, noting that the seizures included food items, narcotics, petroleum products and foreign‑used vehicles.

Food items seized include 4,998 cartons of Doga spaghetti (10 kg each) and 419 cartons of Oba spaghetti (10 kg each) imported from Turkey, together with 2,200 kegs of Indonesian vegetable oil, with a combined duty‑paid value of ₦513 million.

Drugs intercepted comprise 11 wraps of crystal meth (12 kg), 16 pieces of heroin (16 kg) and 3,373 wraps of cannabis sativa totalling 1,502 kg.

Other seized items include 6,750 litres of Premium Motor Spirit, 4,738 bags of foreign‑parboiled rice (50 kg each), two foreign‑used vehicles, eight means of conveyance and 309 bundles of used pneumatic tyres.

The Acting Comptroller said the combined Duty‑Paid Value of all the goods is ₦2,006,008,898.

He said the contraband was recovered at several border checkpoints, including Lusada/Ado‑Odo, Abule Kazeem/Igbo‑Ora, Abeokuta, Imeko, Idiri‑Oko/Owode and Ipokia.

He warned that the smuggled food items, which bypassed health inspections, pose a serious public‑health risk.

“Unscrupulous traders smuggle substandard products, endangering the health of unsuspecting Nigerians,” he said.

The command also reported ₦27,291,861 in legitimate revenue generated as of 16 December 2025.

The Acting Comptroller said In line with inter‑agency protocol, the seized cannabis will be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Idiri‑Oko Special Command for further action.

He commended the Comptroller‑General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for his leadership and thanked officers, sister agencies, traditional leaders, community informants and the youth for their support.
